Dubai: A two-month-old baby in her arms. A mother stands helplessly, unable to give even a drop of breast milk to her hungry, crying baby. There is no place to lay her head, uncertainty about what will happen tomorrow. She wants to return to her homeland, but she has no travel documents. At that moment, when she thought everything in front of her – the doors were closed – was the moment when the Dubai government’s care came into the life of Kenyan Ruth Whytera. The Center for Harboring in Al Aweer tells us about that experience, which has become a shining example of humanity.
.Ruth came to Dubai in 2024 on a visitor visa, dreaming of a better job. However, due to problems with the documents and passport-related obstacles, she did not get the job she expected. As the days passed, all the savings she had were gone. In the meantime, Ruth, who was pregnant, gave birth to a baby girl. Life became more miserable. She had no place to stay and was left helpless, holding her baby close to her.It was during this crisis that Ruth learned about the GDRFA Dubai Center for Harboring in Al Aweer through a friend. She came there with her baby as a last resort. She was afraid that she would have to face questioning and accusations from the officials. But what awaited her was compassion and care.The female officer who received Ruth comforted her and patiently listened to her entire life story. Then, “Don’t worry… we are with you to bring you and the baby safely to your home country,” the words that brought new hope to Ruth’s shattered mind. In the following days, a safe accommodation was arranged for Ruth and the baby. A special locker was also provided to store her belongings. When the baby’s health deteriorated, they took her to the medical clinic and ensured the necessary treatment and medicine.They took care of my baby as if it were their own. They prepared everything we needed. “I never felt alone there,” Ruth says gratefully.
Meanwhile, the officials coordinated with the Kenyan embassy to prepare travel documents. Finally, Ruth received a plane ticket to return to her homeland on July 31.When the officials wished her to “return to life with more strength… May this be a new beginning,” Ruth’s eyes filled not with sadness; but with relief and gratitude. She said with emotion that she would never forget the human face of the Dubai government that embraced her and her baby…

Before returning home, Ruth had only one message to give to those who want to come to the UAE with their dreams of expatriation.
“Come to the UAE only after securing a job. No one else should have to go through the pain I went through.”

He clarified that the centre does not punish those facing economic and social crises, but provides comprehensive support, including necessary accommodation, healthcare, personal care, assistance in finding employment and travel facilities. “This is not a prison; it is a service centre where people are treated with dignity and compassion. “This reflects the humanitarian face of the UAE leadership,” he added.Major General Dr. Ali bin Ajif Al Zaabi, Assistant Director General for the Follow-up Sector for Violators and Foreigners, said that the center is a comprehensive system designed to find solutions to humanitarian cases quickly and efficiently. Special teams monitor each case from the moment a person arrives at the center until they leave the country. He added that the center’s uniqueness lies in providing all services under one roof, including healthcare, basic living facilities, legal procedures, coordination with consulates, travel documents, flight tickets and boarding passes.
